There are a range of records which are best reviewed on an area-wide basis, and these fall into the following categories :

Records of birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial and probate

These include civil registration, lists of parish register copies (individual parish coverage is in the parish specific section), marriage licences, bonds and allegations, marriage indices (individual parish coverage is in the parish specific section), lists of monumental inscription transcripts (individual parish coverage is in the parish specific section), inquisitions post mortem, wills, administrations and inventories before and after 1858, and death duty registers.

Censuses, tax records, and other lists of individuals

These include census records for 1841-1901. The tax records include poll tax and lay subsidy returns, tontines, land tax, window tax, hearth tax and marriage registration tax. The other lists include recusancy rolls, protestation and association oath returns, militia lists, muster rolls, poll books, electoral lists, burgess rolls and trade directories. Legal records

These include close rolls, feet of fines, deeds registered before and after 1736, Quarter Sessions records and manorial records (individual parish coverage is in the parish specific section).

Genealogical and heraldic sources

These include published pedigrees and heralds' visitations.

Subsidiary sources

These include newspapers, pictures, postcards and photographs.
