MONTACUTE, SOMERSET

The South Somerset District Council website provides a good introduction to Montacute including a brief history and photograph gallery, while the GENUKI page for Montacute includes some postcards and a 1900 map. Duncan Weir's website [now defunct] included a page on the village and a scan of the first page of the 1889 Kelly's directory entry. The location of the parish can be viewed on the South Somerset parish map.

Parish records

The registers commence in 1558. Somerset Record Office provides a useful summary of holdings. Extracts from the registers for 1598-1695 are in the SOG Library, and baptisms and marriages for the same dates are incorporated in the IGI.

Baptisms Duncan Weir's website previously included a surname index for 1770-1899, with a summary of surname prevalence, but the site now appears to be defunct
Marriages Duncan Weir's website previously included a surname index for 1800-1952, with a summary of surname prevalence, but the site now appears to be defunct
The years 1754-1837 are included in the Somerset Marriage Index

A selection of Montacute baptisms for particular surnames (Bool, Chaffey, G(e)ard etc, Ger(r)ard etc, Lovell, Rugg, Turner) by Graham Jones appears on Tim Weakley's website.
