SMALLWOOD FAMILY HISTORY

DESCENDANTS OF CAPTAIN CHARLES SMALLWOOD, PROBABLY OF CUMBRIA

Captain Charles Smallwood was a merchant seaman, born around 1690, who traded in the Whitehaven (Cumberland, UK), Barbados, Virginia triangle during the mid-18th century. He may link in to one of the Smallwood lines in Cumbria. His grandson Captain Joseph Smallwood appears to have returned to England (Whitehaven) during the War of Independence, before accepting a Loyalist land grant in Prince Edward Island in about 1783, and several researchers (including Gene Smallwood) have compiled a tree of his descendants which now numbers around 4000. There are Smallwoods of this line in Canada, Texas, Kentucky, Illinois, Oklahoma, Alberta and South Carolina. An outline of part of the tree (the Descendants of Capt. Joseph Smallwood and Magdalen (Margaret) MacRobie) is provided on the Prince Edward Island website (The Island Register) by Dave Hunter. This is the family of Joey Smallwood, former Premier of Newfoundland.
