THE SMALLWOOD FAMILY IN STAFFORDSHIRE

Historical background

The Smallwood family have had a notable presence in Staffordshire from an early date, and apart from the proximity to the primary suggested origin for the Smallwood name in nearby Cheshire, Staffordshire offers its own possibility for an alternative origin. The locality of Smallwood, 1 1/2 miles WSW of Marchwood, in whose parish it lies, is an estate and hamlet first mentioned in 1382 (apparently in a reference to an Elizabeth de Smalwode). The wood in question was a detached part of Needwood Forest, with small meaning 'narrow' rather than 'little' in this context. The primary residence in the area, Marchington Woodlands Manor, was superseded by Smallwood Hall (a Georgian-style house) and later by Smallwood Manor, built in 1884 by R W Ellis for the Hodgson family in the style of an Eastbourne villa and later converted to a preparatory school (some notes from A Guide to Staffordshire & the Black Country ... by Michael Raven).

Matthew Smallwood (1612-1683), the well-known Dean of Lichfield, Staffordshire, was apparently descended from the Smallwoods of Chelford in Cheshire.

The Smallwoods of Egton in North Yorkshire also claimed descent from the 'Smallwoods of Staffordshire', although there is no clearly evident link.
