SAYER FAMILY HISTORY

This page is dedicated to the history of the family of James Sayer (~1700 - 1771) of Bowes, North Yorkshire.

Historical background

It is not clear who were the parents of James as there is no baptismal record but it is thought most likely he was the son of James Sayer (~1660 - 1716) and Christian Bainbridge (1666 - 1701).

The descendants of the youngest son of James, Charles (1742 – 1797), are so numerous that they are shown in a separate section.

The descendants of James have been very involved in the life of Bowes to the present time. His son William (1735 - 1825) was parish clerk for 47 years, followed by his son Michael Sayer ( - 1872) and grandson William Sayer (1822 - >1881). George Sayer (1781 - 1845), brother of Michael, was sexton for 20+ years.

Another son of James, Wharton (1737 - 1798), was one of the overseers of poor. James Sayer (~1765 - 1843), son of Wharton, was innkeeper of the Rose & Crown in Bowes. On his death his son Mark Sayer (1802 - 1874) took over as innkeeper. Mark was also a trustee of the William Hutchinson   Free Grammar School as was his son James Sayer (1848 - 1921). James was also a church warden and the family lived in the Manor House. His daughter Margaret Eleanor Robertson nee Sayer (1883 - 1962) gave a bequest to St. Giles church which is commemorated by a plaque in the church and there is a window in the church commemorating her parents.

Not all of James’ descendants stayed in the Bowes area however: Matthew Sayer (1774 - 1848), grandson of James by his son of William was a wheelwright who moved with his family to Leeds; Thomas Walton Sayer (1846 - 1900) moved to London as a tea merchant.

A seventh generation descendent of James (~1700 – 1771), Hannah Hauxwell (1926 -  ) is well known through TV and books of her life on her remote farm in Baldersdale.
