This page is dedicated to the history of the family of John Sayer (1688 - 1774) of Bowes, North Yorkshire.

Historical background

John Sayer was the eldest child of James Sayer and Christine Bainbridge who was christened at Bowes on 25 Mar 1688.

It is thought that John and his wife Margaret Bousfield had seven children. Two of their girls are known to have had descendants but the main line of descent was through their son James (1724 - 1814). The family seem to have been yeoman farmers and as the 18^th century progressed they appear to have done particularly well, adding to their land holdings. They moved to West Gates, a farm close to Gilmonby, in about 1731 and James took over the farm when his father John died.  James benefited from the enclosure of Gilmonby Moor in 1802, gaining land and grazing rights.

Unfortunately the three sons of James (John, James and Joseph) fell out over his will after he died in 1814 and ultimately the case went to the Chancery Court. As a result that part of the family went into decline as landowners and they dispersed from Bowes. Joseph Sayer (1768 - 1822) went to live in Leeds and his son John Sayer (1795 - 1862) moved to Chesterfield where he became a prominent member of the community. His descendants are shown in a separate section.

One of the daughters of James, Margaret Sayer (1757 – 1797-1804) married Robert Milner (~1755 - >1825). After her death he remarried but he was convicted in 1810 of sheep stealing and sentenced to be hanged. The sentence was commuted and he was transported to Australia in 1811.

One of the sons of Eber Sayer (~1806-1859), John Roddam Sayer (~1829 - 1894) became a chemist in Monkwearmouth and his son Eber Edward Sayer (1854 - >1881) possibly emigrated to USA about 1885. Another of his sons, Julius Thomas Sayer (~1834 - 1899), became the proprietor of a hotel in Newcastle . The family of John James Sayer (1841 - >1901), a cousin of Julius Thomas, also moved to Newcastle .
