PRIDDLE FAMILY HISTORY

NOTES ON KEN SMITH'S SPREADSHEET

So far as the writer is aware, Ken Smith's spreadsheet was compiled from Ron Priddle's original Somerset research as computerised by Robin Priddle. It contains 1,579 entries of Priddle baptisms and births (55%), marriages and banns (26%), deaths and burials (18%), plus a few other notes, drawn from 84 Somerset parishes. Roughly half of the entries are drawn from original parish registers, with 37% from Dr. Campbell's index, 2% from Bishop's Transcripts, and the remaining 11% from a mixture of indices including Boyd, Phillimore, the PRO/Fell index and the 1984 and 1988 versions of the IGI. Where possible entries are annotated with Ron Priddle's original PFT codes, linking them to a series of trees.

The geographic concentration of Priddles reflected in the index may not fully reflect underlying densities, as it is partially influenced by the date and parish coverage of the underlying sources, but it gives a good picture as to the principal locations of the Priddles in south Somerset. Kingsbury Episcopi (22%), Tintinhull (18%) and Curry Mallet (11%) between them account for around half the entries, with the majority of remaining entries in the immediately surrounding parishes.
