HOCKEY FAMILY HISTORY

SOME NOTES ON THE HOCKEY FAMILY OF HORSINGTON

A branch of the Hockey family has flourished in the area around Horsington in Somerset from at least the early 1700's, and this line has been investigated by a number of researchers over the years including, notably, Deidre Neville. John Hockey married Elizabeth Waite in Horsington in 1727, and an outline summary of their descendant tree and associated researchers is attached. The family spread to nearby South Cadbury, Sparkford, Castle Cary and Marston Magna, with further emigration to South Wales (Cardiff), the USA (New York state) and Australia (Victoria).

Jennifer Burrell's website contains extensive details of the Australian Hockey descendants of James, Samuel and Charlotte, children of Daniel and Ann (Reakes) Hockey of Shepton Mallett. James and Samuel were transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1830, married sisters Ann and Bridget Barfoot, and settled in Victoria in 1847. Samuel was joined in 1854 by his elderly parents and widowed sister Charlotte and her four daughters.
