AYTON FAMILY HISTORY

This page is dedicated to the history of the Ayton family of Scotland.

The Ayton (or Aiton, Aitoun) name has a long and interesting history in Scotland, and has been the focus of the Ayton Family Society discussed on the introductory page. The family appear to have spread into the north-west of England, but there are also stories of perambulations further afield. One branch was alleged to have moved to mainland Europe 'for religious reasons' before emigrating from there to North America. It has also been mooted that some of the East Anglian Aytons may have been descendants of Scottish immigrants given the lack of apparent early evidence for the name in the area. This all remains an area for further research.

Anyone who is able to provide additional material or links relevant to this branch of the Ayton family is invited to contact the coordinator for this page Ian Hall.
